We had several high level executives on site today at work. The global CEO in fact, and a small entourage of additional executives. What was so fascinating to me was observing all our staff waiting in anticipation of their arrival. We had a large town hall organised for the full office and arranged for various external parties to help prepare the engagement.

Why is it that when someone more senior or deemed more superior in a company arrives, do people panic, anxiety raises, people make more of an effort in their attire and try to present themselves in a better light, we even had about 50% more staff in the office than usual. What do people expect to achieve in impressing their superiors? An increase in position, recognition for their work, simply being acknowledged as an important contributor to the companies objectives?

Aspiration, recognition, and purpose - these are the feelings and contributing factors that can assist in through streamlining these emotions we can direct them toward growth in any endeavour. There is something to be said on how the change in character of both management and staff can contribute to the pursuit or prevention in obtaining happiness.

When employees witness their seniors, especially high-level executives such as the global CEO, it ignites a spark within them. There is a deep rooted desire to impress and gain the attention of those in power. This stems from a basic human need for recognition and validation. Employees strive for their hard work to be acknowledged and rewarded, as it gives everyone a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem.

On the other hand, this pursuit of impressing superiors can also lead to anxiety and a fear of failure. The pressure to present in a more favourable light and to make a lasting impression can be overwhelming and force a secluded feeling of underachievement or lack of self worth. This change in character, driven by the anticipation of evaluation or judgment, creates a deep sense of unease.

The increased presence of superiors completely changes the existing dynamics within the workplace. With more executives on site, there may be a greater emphasis on following protocols, standards, and the overall company culture. This change can contribute to both positive and negative outcomes.

It’s important to be confident in yourself and your abilities, confident in your position and confident that you play a contributing factor in the companies objectives or even just a community objective. Obtaining recognition from superiors can be an elevating feeling but it’s important to not let yourself be dragged into a feeling of worth via the acknowledgment of others.

Thanks,
