The Search 4 Happiness
Day 172 - Division

Today, a vote is being held for a referendum. The question is: "To alter the Constitution to recognize the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?"
One of the primary arguments against it is that saying yes will create a divide by creating a separate group of people within the Constitution. What is division? And who is the judge or decision-maker to dictate who has the true right to draw the line?
For decades, the Aboriginals of Australia have been treated as second-class citizens. From a neutral standpoint, and being an immigrant, I believe they are still treated like that, to an extent. Prior to a constitutional decision over fifty years ago, they were still actually regarded as flora and fauna, which is completely absurd. When I read that question today, I felt somewhat racist even considering it an option.
The definition of divide is 'a difference or disagreement between two groups, typically producing tension.' In order to have a division, though, there needs to be an equal footing, and in order to have an equal footing, all groups need to be recognized. Obviously, this is a political argument, but it falls behind an ancient set of questions, decisions, and outcomes from a previous generation that has actually formed a new society set on a foundation based on division.
In order for us all to be happy, I believe there needs to be an opportunity for all parties to share open dialogue and discussion, in a neutral and equal position. The First Nations People are simply another example of forcing divide through skewed power, continuing divide through unified power, and propaganda that is set up to sway society into thinking that this is a new divide that doesn't already exist.
Being happy in society is about a collection of ideologies that are based on being good to one another for a collectively happy, nurturing, and secure community. Division and alternative ideologies are important in allowing all groups to have a voice, whether it is in agreement or not. There should be an opportunity for everyone to speak and for everyone to collectively decide on progress forward. The First Nations People have been oppressed for centuries, and this is a significant step in them being brought back into the fold.
In order for us all to succeed in the search for happiness, we must all consider all ideas together. Then we have the opportunity to decide what aspects we choose to absorb in our own internal decisions in our own search for happiness.
Thanks,
Dean
