Day 89 - Devotion

I’ve always had a fascination with monks, priests, imams, and individuals who dedicate their lives to a higher cause, and it is something that truly resonates with me. Several years back, I had the opportunity to visit a monastery in India where the monks had taken vows of silence. It was an amazing experience being able to witness the commitment and discipline that they had cultivated over the course of 30+ years.
I believe that the motivation behind taking such a vow stems from a deep desire to remove the distractions of everyday life and focus on something more profound. By choosing to speak less or removing speech entirely, these monks enhance their ability to listen and cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. This act of sacrifice is truly humbling and was a true reminder of the power of belief and the potential for personal transformation.
While I wouldn't consider myself to be a religious person, I do recognize the importance of religious leaders who dedicate themselves to inspiring positive change within their communities. These leaders commit themselves to the betterment of society, emphasizing values such as education, progress, and creating a strong sense of unity. It is through their selfless devotion that they guide others towards becoming better human beings.
Over time I have come to believe in a universal energy, a higher purpose, or a greater good that transcends individual religions or belief systems. It is not about rigid adherence to specific ideologies, but rather acknowledging and embracing the interconnectedness of all living beings. I feel that religion often gets wrongly perceived as narrow-minded and exclusive, but in reality, it is an attempt to understand and connect with the unknown forces that are the fundamentals of our existence.
The experience at the monastery in India had a profound impact on me, it opened my eyes to the profound depths of the human psyche and the boundless possibilities that lie within. It taught me that the ability to sacrifice something significant in order to cultivate a deeper devotion to something beyond ourselves is a testament to the beauty of human nature.
Ultimately, the pursuit of a higher purpose and the dedication to serving something greater than ourselves is a remarkable aspect of the human experience. Whether it is through religious devotion, personal philosophy, or a spiritual connection, the desire to find meaning and contribute positively to the world is a testament to our capacity for growth and transcendence.
