“In the depths of your inner being is where your consciousness lives - the thoughts are closer in, the emotions a little further away, and form is way out there. Behind it all, there you are. A true spiritual being lives their without effort or intent, observing the objects in front” - Michael Singer.

The idea of your thoughts and emotions being objects within the confines of your own mind, separate from consciousness, seems like a mind-boggling statement. But who is the voice that talks to the voice in your own head? Who listens to that voice? Who makes the judgment calls on the emotions charged by the accusations, thoughts, and ideas that that voice makes? It’s you, separate from those voices and emotions.

Deep in the depths of your own mind is a spiritual entity that sits and observes its internal and external surroundings. The external surroundings are perceived through a lens, created by a complex system and structure of thought patterns, internal dialogue, and subsequently, a perception of the world. The internal factors that dictate these things are created by a wondering mind and an emotionally charged system, which is a separate object from your consciousness. You are not your mind; you simply observe, evaluate, and based on your understanding of these objects, create the understanding of your own truths to project to the world.

The ability to dissect the opinions of the voices inside your head is sometimes easy, but sometimes incredibly difficult. The subsequent emotions can become supercharged, leading to heavy anxiety and strain on yourself. I find it challenging, to say the least, to break the voice down and come to the realization that it is just another object within my mind. Together with external factors, it creates what, who, and why I believe I am. I know that having control over that voice, controlling my emotions, and understanding the spiritual being in the depths of my mind is the consciousness of my soul. I also know that the search for happiness is heavily influenced by the unified balance and cohesion between these objects, but more importantly, by self-belief and understanding that the perception is generated by an internal dialogue that is constructed through the control of yourself.

“To realise that you are not your thoughts is when you begin to awaken spirituality” - Eckhart Tolle
